Dozens of participants took part in beach and seabed clean-up activities, as well as in the workshops held during the opening day of the competition
This Saturday marked the start of a new edition of the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro in Arona, one of the most notable surfing festivals in Europe, supported by the Island Council through Tenerife Tourism and the Tenerife Awaken Emotions brand. The event will run until November 8, hosting up to four competitions and welcoming the best national and international surfers.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tenerife Tourism, who welcomed participants to a first day with a strong environmental focus. The day also featured the Moving The Planet Foundation, through its ‘Surfing With Me’ project, and Surfrider Foundation. This initiative, also supported by the Island Council through Tenerife Tourism, brings together sustainability, art, sport and social action in defence of the oceans.
Throughout the first day of the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro, various environmental activities were carried out: a beach clean-up organised together with Surfrider Foundation; educational workshops for children, led by Moving The Planet, aimed at instilling respect for the marine environment in younger generations; talks on sustainable culture and coastal conservation; and a seabed clean-up organised by Travel Sub Dive Center.
Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tenerife Tourism, stated that “Tenerife becomes, once again, the epicentre of European surfing with this new edition, which will welcome the continent’s best surfers in a transversal event that brings together sport, culture, social activism and environmental protection.”
For Melwani, the 2025 edition is even more special because “we are launching the Surfing With Me project, an initiative born on the island’s coast with the aim of raising awareness about cigarette butt pollution in the sea. Choosing surfing as the vehicle for this awareness campaign is a success, helping promote the environmental education that is so necessary to protect one of our most valuable resources: our oceans.”
José Alberto Hernández, president of the Moving The Planet Foundation, stated: “For the Moving The Planet Foundation, it is an honour to be part of the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro with our project ‘Surfing With Me’. We are grateful to contribute, together with Surfrider Foundation and Fruela, to an action as necessary as waste collection along our coasts. We will continue working and promoting initiatives like this because we believe that our land, our seas and our culture are the foundation for growing together.”
This start reinforces, once again, the organisation’s strong commitment to being a surfing festival with purpose: not only to enjoy great waves, but also to promote active, respectful and responsible tourism on the island.
An excellent start for a festival that continues to strengthen its position as a sporting, cultural and environmental reference.
