A day of strong emotions in Arona. The Tenerife PRO Spanish Championship and the Surfing.es PRO and Iberdrola PRO leagues reached their peak today with the decisive rounds of the men’s and women’s divisions. With no waves breaking at Las Palmeras, the Fitenia spot welcomed the country’s top riders with excellent conditions for showcasing their surfing.
In the men’s division, Sean Gunning (12.86) redeemed himself after the disappointment of last year—when he finished second—and claimed the title by displaying an exceptional level of surfing in every heat. In the quarterfinals, he posted the best wave of the entire event (9.87), and in the final he prevailed over defending champion Andy Criere, who finished second (11.50), Yago Domínguez (8.93) in third, and Kalani Da Silva (8.50) in fourth place.
The Cantabrian rider arrived in Las Américas eager for redemption and now leaves as the new Spanish champion, having won every single heat over the two days of competition. “Last year things went the way they did and I ended up second. I came back this year with the same hunger, and I’m super happy to have won — it’s incredible,” Gunning said.
In the women’s division, Melania Suárez (14.67) dominated all her heats from start to finish. The Tenerife surfer claimed victory in a high-level final against local and multi-time Las Américas champion Daniela Boldini (11.93), defending national title holder Lucía Machado (11.07), and Basque rider Silke Martínez (7.36).
“What can I say… I’m so happy and excited to compete in the final with three friends, with my mother and my friends watching me from the beach… Super happy,” said the newly crowned Spanish champion moments after her win.
Román Díez, president of the Spanish Surfing Federation, stated: “We are very satisfied with the development of the Tenerife Pro Spanish Surf Open Championship 2025. It has been a resounding success, the result of the joint effort of both the Spanish Surfing Federation staff and the event’s organizing team.
Despite the demanding conditions at various moments in the competition, we all worked in the same direction, coordinated and united by the common goal of delivering the best championship possible. The final result has been extremely positive and reflects the commitment, professionalism, and dedication of everyone involved.
I want to congratulate the winners for their level and commitment, while also acknowledging the work of all the athletes who took part in this edition. I would also like to thank the local organizers and sponsors for their support and trust. Their involvement is essential for ensuring that championships like this can take place in the best possible conditions.”
For the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, “once again, the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro strengthens its position as one of Europe’s standout surfing events, highlighting the exceptional quality and level of both national and international surfers taking part, along with additional activities designed to encourage active participation from the public and a reinforced commitment to the natural environment.”
Melwani added that “the celebration of this championship consolidates our destination model linked to sports practice and sustainability, as well as its contribution to other sectors of activity.”
The Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro continues from this Friday with the Canary Islands Junior Championship, provided conditions allow. Over the weekend, a second beach cleanup is scheduled, and performances — including Los Salvapantallas — will take place during the Spring Night event held this friday in collaboration with Spring Hotels.
This event would not be possible without the support of institutions such as Turismo de Arona, the Island Council (Cabildo) through Turismo de Tenerife and the Tenerife Awaken Emotions brand, Islas Canarias and the Government of the Canary Islands; brands such as Spring Hotels or Corona; and collaborating companies including Surfactory, Local Motion, Quirónsalud, Papagayo Tenerife, and Veinte 04.
The full program of activities and all the latest updates from the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro are available on the official event website (lasamericassurfpro.com) and on its social media channels (@lasamericasurfpro).
